Who We Help

Sexual, Developmental & Attachment Trauma Treatment for Teen Boys

Beneath almost every problematic behavior we treat is unresolved trauma. When a teen has lived through sexual trauma, early-childhood or developmental trauma, disrupted attachment, or the wounds of adoption and loss, the pain doesn’t simply fade — it surfaces in his behavior, his relationships, and his sense of safety. STAR Guides is a trauma-informed program built to reach and heal those roots, in a wilderness setting uniquely suited to the deep work recovery requires.

Understanding Trauma in Teen Boys

Trauma isn’t only what happened — it’s the imprint those experiences leave on a developing brain and nervous system. Sexual trauma, developmental and early-childhood trauma, disrupted or insecure attachment, adoption-related loss, and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) can all leave a teen feeling unsafe, dysregulated, and disconnected long after the events themselves.

For many of the boys we serve, this unresolved trauma is the root beneath the behaviors families actually see — including compulsive and problematic sexual behavior. That is why simply managing the behavior rarely creates lasting change. Reaching and resolving the underlying trauma is what allows a teen to genuinely heal.

How Trauma Often Shows Up

  • Emotional dysregulation — anger, anxiety, or shutdown that seems out of proportion
  • Hypervigilance, trouble feeling safe, or being easily startled
  • Difficulty trusting, connecting, or forming secure relationships
  • Withdrawal, numbness, or emotional distance
  • Sleep problems, nightmares, or trouble concentrating
  • Acting out — including sexually — as a way of coping with overwhelming feelings
  • Shame, low self-worth, or a harsh inner voice

Trauma responses are the mind and body’s attempt to stay safe. With the right treatment, they can be understood and healed.

How STAR Guides Treats Trauma

STAR Guides is trauma-informed at its foundation: every part of the program is designed around safety, trust, and helping a dysregulated nervous system settle, so that real therapeutic work becomes possible. Guided by a CSAT-credentialed clinical director and licensed therapists, your son works through his trauma in twice-weekly individual therapy, daily group sessions, and structured family work.

Our clinicians draw on evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches — including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, and experiential, wilderness-based therapy — matched to each teen’s history and needs. Rather than only treating symptoms, this reaches the developmental, attachment, and trauma-related drivers underneath a teen’s behavior, so the healing holds after he returns home.

Why the Wilderness Supports Trauma Recovery

Trauma lives in the nervous system — and the wilderness is a uniquely regulating place to heal it. Away from screens, noise, and everyday triggers, the calm and predictability of the natural environment help a teen’s overtaxed stress response begin to settle. Daily physical challenge, rhythm, and routine support that regulation in a way a traditional office setting can’t, and the steady presence of instructors and a small peer group provides the co-regulation and felt safety that trauma recovery depends on.

In that settled, safe state, your son can finally do the deeper work of processing what happened — and begin building a new, durable sense of security.

Common Questions

Can trauma be the cause of my son's sexual behavior?

Often, yes. Unresolved trauma, disrupted attachment, and emotional dysregulation are among the most common drivers of problematic sexual behavior in teens. That is why STAR Guides treats the underlying trauma, not just the behavior on the surface.

What is trauma-informed care?

Trauma-informed care is an approach that recognizes how deeply trauma affects a young person's brain, body, and behavior, and builds treatment around safety, trust, and regulation. At STAR Guides it shapes everything from how staff interact with students to how therapy is delivered.

How does wilderness therapy help with trauma?

The calm, low-stimulation natural environment, daily physical activity and routine, and steady human support all help a dysregulated nervous system settle, creating the safety a teen needs to process trauma. It also removes the screens and everyday triggers that keep many teens in a constant state of stress.

How long is the program?

The STAR Guides program is designed as a 120 to 150 day experience, with most students becoming eligible for graduation within that window.

Your son’s trauma does not have to define his future. With safety, time, and the right therapeutic support, boys process what they’ve been carrying — and rediscover who they are beneath it.
